About the Freebie Barn

In January 2023, the Town of Kittery reopened the Freebie Barn program in collaboration with the Climate Adaptation Committee and Kittery Climate Action Now (KCAN).  The revitalized Freebie Barn program included a variety of changes that allow us to focus the types of items that are collected, assist residents with recycling and reutilization of common and urgently needed items, and reduce the number of items that linger at the Freebie Barn and ultimately end up in the waste stream.

Since it reopened, over 13,000 lbs has been donated and diverted from the waste stream.  But we’re not done yet!

What’s new at the Freebie Barn?

  • The Freebie Barn’s schedule will now observe hours on Wednesdays AND Saturdays each month (dependent on volunteer availability).
  • The Freebie Barn will no longer follow monthly donation themes. Residents are welcome to donate items in good working condition, as space allows. All donations will be checked by our volunteers. Acceptability of donations is at the discretion of our volunteers.
  • The Freebie Barn will continue utilizing local Community Partners to ensure items that still have useful life, can be repurposed or reused by those in need.
    • Residents that are interested in donating items in response to specific local needs are also encouraged to explore the Community Resource Donation Guide.  The guide includes several local organizations that collect/repurpose items, in addition to what can be donated to the Freebie Barn.

What condition should items be in for drop off?

All items must be clean, dry and in good working condition.  Volunteers will have to turn away items that are not capable of being reused or accepted by our recycling partners.  Information will be provided for alternative recycling options, if possible.

What if I have items I want to drop off that are not accepted by volunteers?

Working with our partners, the Town has developed a Community Resource Donation Guide for residents.  The guide will include the wide variety of options available to recycle all manner of items in our area.

When will the Freebie Barn be open?

Beginning in January 2024, the Freebie Barn will observe regular operating hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays!

The Freebie Barn at the Kittery Resource Recovery Facility will be open to the public for item drop-offs and pick-ups:

  • Wednesdays from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

  • Saturdays from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Please note: the Freebie Barn’s open hours will be dependent upon volunteer availability.

How will the Freebie Barn operate?

The Freebie Barn is a volunteer-operated program and requires engaged citizens like YOU to help make it a success.

Volunteers will review items being dropped off to determine the acceptability of donated items based on condition/use/barn capacity.

How can I get involved with the Freebie Barn?

The Town of Kittery is currently seeking green-minded volunteers for the Freebie Barn program.   Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:
