Traip Academy Storm Chasers - Town Hall Hallway
In recent years, many Traip Academy students have expressed an interest in the phenomenon of sea level rise (SLR) and its effects on the New England coastline. In response to these interests, Traip Academy has been engaging students directly in the collection of flood event imagery as citizen scientists, using emerging technologies that connect students and their mobile phones with data collection.

Projections of future sea levels come from a variety of sources, but all predict an increase to come. The causes of SLR include thermal expansion and melting ice sheets caused by increasing global temperatures (Source: NASA). These increases are, in turn, largely dependent on future greenhouse gas emissions and the world's response to climate initiatives to curb them.

To document the effects of SLR on our community, the students consulted with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and offered assistance in developing a photo "library" or database of coastal flood events. In class, they continue to emphasize the use of Geographic Information Systems to better understand trends in spatial analysis and improve our "ground truthing" capabilities.

Stop by Town Hall to check out the Storm Chasers photo gallery display. For more information on this exciting student program, check out their website

Thank you to Traip Academy teacher, Tim Foret, for guiding these students and working with Kittery administrative staff to implement this display at Town Hall.
