Previous Updates:

May 13, 2023 Construction Update:

With the completion of the Kittery Water District’s utility work in the Foreside, the next construction phase of the Walker/Wentworth sidewalk project is set to begin.  Residents and community members can expect to see activity related to construction prep work and pavement milling/grinding, beginning the week of May 20, 2024.

Once the initial pavement work is complete, the construction team will focus on the remainder of the project which includes roadway drainage work, as well as new sidewalks and traffic signal improvements.

During the Walker/Wentworth construction, lane shifts and temporary lane closures will be implemented as needed to provide safe working conditions.  A minimum of alternating one-way traffic will be maintained along Walker Street at all times, and two-way traffic will be restored daily.

In addition, two-way traffic traveling in and out of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and full pedestrian access meeting ADA requirements will be maintained during construction.

The public is asked to observe and follow all posted signage, traffic flaggers, parking restrictions and please be mindful while traveling through the construction zone.  Due to the location and nature of this project, the impacts of construction will be real and the patience of our local businesses, residents and the community members will be needed and appreciated.

April 30, 2024 Construction Update

The detour from Monday, April 29, 2024 has been extended and will be in place until 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

With the detour in place, traffic on Walker Street heading inbound towards the PNS Gate 1 entrance/intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic beyond Jones Avenue.  Inbound traffic will be detoured down Jones Avenue to Government Street. For a map of the detour, please click here.

Traffic flaggers and a police detail will be stationed throughout the area directing vehicles to reduce congestion and maintain the flow of traffic.

Traffic delays are expected while road work is taking place. We appreciate the patience of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, as we work to complete this project.

April 24, 2024 Construction Update

This April, the Kittery Water District will be completing road work necessary to install a new water main on Walker Street (between Dame Street and the PNS Gate 1 intersection).  Construction will begin on Monday, April 29, 2024, and will occur Monday - Friday during the hours of 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM.
The utility work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete.

On Monday April 29, 2024

On Monday, April 29, 2024, traffic on Walker Street heading inbound towards the PNS Gate 1 entrance/intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic beyond Jones Avenue.  During this time, a detour will be in place directing inbound traffic down Jones Avenue to Government Street.

For a map of the detour, please click here.

Traffic flaggers and a police detail will be stationed throughout the area directing vehicles to reduce congestion and maintain the flow of traffic.

After Monday, April 29, 2024

Following the one-day detour on April 29, 2024, traffic on Walker Street heading inbound to the PNS Gate 1 entrance/intersection will be reduced to one-lane approaching the intersection.

Additional information to note:

  • Four parking spaces in front of the Dance Hall will be restricted as “no parking” due to the proximity of the water main and road work in this area.
  • For approximately two days, there will be no access to the municipal parking lot from the Walker Street entrance.
    •  The parking lot will remain accessible from the Government Street side entrance.

Equipment operation and construction within the confines of roadways is very difficult and safety is always a concern.  When traveling through the construction area please slow down, follow all posted signage and be mindful of those working within the roadways.
