Whipple Road Sidewalk (MDOT project)

  • Project Completed June 2023
  • April 10, 2023
    • Construction on the Whipple Road Sidewalk Project will resume on Monday, April 10, 2022.  In order for concrete sidewalks to be poured, construction work will begin with the excavation of gravel placed for winter stabilization.  Due to safety concerns within the construction zone, the sidewalk (on Whipple from Wyman Ave to just before Tudor Drive) will remain closed until concrete has been poured and cured in place.
      • After the concrete sidewalk is installed, the Town’s contractor will complete final punch list items, which include: reseeding loam on the backsides of the sidewalk, ensuring driveways are tied in appropriately and restoring disturbed areas from all construction activities. Construction work will continue this spring until completion, pending weather and contractor availability.
      • Equipment operation and construction within the confines of roadways is very difficult and safety is always a concern.  Flaggers will be stationed throughout the roadway, directing traffic during lane closures.  Residents should expect traffic delays while the paving and milling work is completed.
  • November 3, 2022
    • As part of the Town of Kittery’s Whipple Road Sidewalk Project, road paving and milling work will be taking place on Whipple Road between Wyman Ave and Old Ferry Lane on November 4, 2022.  Paving to tie in existing driveways, including Tilton Ave and Newson Ave, into the new Whipple Road pavement will be taking place beginning Monday, November 7, 2022 - Friday, November 18, 2022.
  • August 1, 2022
    • The Town of Kittery has awarded a contract for the Whipple Road Sidewalk Project, and work is scheduled to begin on Monday,  August 1, 2022. The project includes installation of approximately 0.7 miles of concrete sidewalk with granite curbing on Whipple Road, connecting the existing sidewalk between Wyman Avenue and Tudor Drive. Work will continue until the project is complete, as weather, contractor and town staff schedules allow.
      • Due to the width of the roadway and the space required for the construction, the contractor is not able to create a safe temporary-pedestrian-path around the construction area. We recognize this will impact pedestrian access and bike safety while the project is being implemented. We appreciate pedestrians and cyclists’ patience as we work to complete this project.
