Sale of Real Estate and Your Tax Bill:

Maine law provides that the taxable status of all real estate in the State of Maine be established as of April 1 of each year. If you are the owner of record on April 1 of the current year, you will receive the current year’s tax bill.

What does this mean if you sold property? If you receive the tax bill please forward the first tax bill, issued in September, to the new owner. This is important because if the taxes go unpaid, a municipal lien could be placed on the property under your name.

Personal Property Tax Bills:

Maine law provides the taxable status of all taxable personal property in the State of Maine to be established as of April 1 of each year.

What does this mean for businesses that closed after April 1?  If your business was open on or before April 1 of the current year, you are responsible for the business personal property taxes due. Please send notice to the tax assessor when your business closes in Kittery.
