Although men are also injured in abusive relationships, domestic abuse is considered to be the greatest cause of injury to women today. The statistics differ greatly in men vs. women injuries. The woman receives the more severe injuries than the man in abusive relationships.
For women, abuse exceeds the number of rapes, mugging, and auto accidents combined. In Maine alone, an estimated 60,000 women are abused annually. And the number continues to grow by nearly 10% each year. During 1995, Caring Unlimited served over 2,600 individuals.
Maine laws require the police to:
Stay with you as long as they think you are in danger;
Help you get medical attention;
Charge an abuser with assault if an assault has occurred;
Treat any crimes in your home as they would any other crimes.
