Celebrate National Public Works Week 2012!

Bring the kids and your curiosity to one of the family-friendly events planned for May by the Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Regional exhibitions are set for Friday May 18 in Auburn, Saturday May 19 in Scarborough, and Friday May 25 in Kittery. Kids can explore the big equipment, from dump trucks to bulldozers. There will be games and giveaways, including toy hard hats, balloons and more.

For the grown-ups, this is a chance to visit with public works employees and learn about the work being done in your communities. There will be demonstrations and displays about public works projects. Door prizes include gift cards from local retailers.

“Working behind the scenes to improve your community” is the motto of the Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

For one week each year, we step out from behind the scenes to enjoy some fun activities with the public, and to talk about our jobs. Public Works in the 21st century means so much more than plowing roads. Across the state of Maine, you’ll find dedicated professionals doing a range of essential jobs, from providing safe drinking water to managing recycling programs, from tree planting to hazardous waste collection. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for all residents, leading to stronger, more vibrant and economically secure communities.
